MARYLAND
Wheaton Regional Park (2000 Shorefield Rd., Silver Spring) has a carousel, train ride and sizable playground. It's also next to Brookside Gardens, a lovely spot to walk.
THE DISTRICT
The newly refurbished Petworth Playground (801 Taylor St. NW) is a haven, particularly when it's hot, thanks to the sprayground. It's still a great go-to spot in the fall, with a toddler play area and a playground for older children that has the latest take on monkey bars.
Friendship Park, a.k.a. Turtle Park (45th and Van Ness streets NW). I call this a mini-utopia. Shaded, next to a baseball field and basketball court, with a large sandbox and several climbing structures, it also has a small (but nice) spray area. Oh, and the ice cream truck has been known to show up.
VIRGINIA
Several moms (such good sources on these things!) at Van Dyck said their favorite big escape is Burke Lake Park (7315 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station). Hard to compete with a carousel, a miniature train and an ice cream shop.
Clemyjontri Park (6317 Georgetown Pike, McLean), the park with the weird name, is a great spot. The bright, colorful park has dozens of play sets accessible for children with disabilities. It's covered in rubber flooring, which has its drawbacks, particularly in the summer, because there is no shade. But it also has a beautiful carousel and picnic tables.
