Wilde Lake Coach Doug DuVall has said that he will retire after this, his 36th season at the helm of the Wildecats. DuVall enters Wilde Lake's opener tonight against Long Reach with 296 wins, 20 Howard County championships and 5 state titles. . . .
Northwest Coach Andrew Fields was suspended for tonight's game at Whitman by Montgomery County Athletic Director Duke Beattie after it was discovered his team used prohibited equipment at a camp at the University of Richmond. Fields said he gave storage-room keys to volunteer coaches who, prior to the camp, distributed helmets to the players; the use of helmets is not allowed during the offseason. . . . Rockville Coach Mark Maradei has been suspended for the Rams' home game against Northwood because of the use of an ineligible player last season. . . .
Road trip of the weekend? St. John's (D.C.) put all its players, coaches and staff on one bus (with one bathroom) and drove 854 miles through last night to East St. Louis, Ill., for tomorrow's game against the Flyers. . . .
