BALTIMORE, Sept. 5 -- The Baltimore Orioles exercised a club option for Manager Dave Trembley on Friday to bring him back for the 2009 season and also added a club option for 2010. Financial terms were not released.

"The one that's most important to me and I think our fans is that the players play hard, play with energy, effort and enthusiasm," said team president Andy MacPhail, who credited Trembley for the team's surprising start.

In Trembley's first full season at the helm, the Orioles played above or near the .500 mark before several injuries hastened the team's second-half pitching woes.

"If you don't have the cooperation of your players and your coaches you don't make any progress at all," said Trembley, who invited his entire coaching staff to return.

The Orioles acquired right-handed pitcher Brian Bass from the Minnesota Twins for a player to be named or cash. Bass was 3-4 with a 4.87 ERA in 44 games for the Twins. The Orioles also recalled Brandon Fahey from Class AAA Norfolk and selected the contracts of catcher Omir Santos and right-handed pitcher Alfredo Simon. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles moved reliever Chris Ray (elbow) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list and designated infielder Eider Torres for assignment. . . .

A week after he showed up Trembley by tossing the ball in the air during a pitching change, the Orioles released right-handed reliever Fernando Cabrera. . . .

Major League Baseball suspended hitting coach Terry Crowley for an on-field argument and ejection in Boston on Wednesday. "Did you see the pitch?" Trembley said. "I don't blame him." . . .

Aubrey Huff missed Friday's game for the birth of his son.
