The Redskins' defense came up with a stop to begin the quarter, helped by Andre Carter's sack, the team's first of the season. A Giants punt pinned the Redskins at their 10-yard line, and one first down only prolonged the inevitable: a third-down completion that came up short of a first down. It was their fourth possession of the half, and the fourth that ended on a third-down completion short of the marker. The Giants moved into Washington territory again and seemed poised to put the game out of reach, but another sack forced a punt. Down to their last chance, the Redskins got a 26-yard pass to Antwaan Randle El for their longest pass play of the day. Clinton Portis ran for a first down, but a Chris Samuels holding penalty blunted any momentum. A fourth-down pass to Ladell Betts just before the two-minute warning came up short.
