The heat of a young rivalry was enough to silence a packed stadium during the Frederick-Tuscarora game last night. Host Tuscarora won, 40-6, but the game's final 20 minutes were witnessed by only players, coaches and officials after Maryland State Police vacated the stadium following a series of altercations between fans.
"It was weird," Frederick Coach Vince Ahearn said. "It didn't matter to us because we just weren't good."
With Tuscarora up 40-6 midway through the third quarter, police officers began going through the stands ordering fans to leave following the last of a series of fights between fans.
According to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, it was the schools' decision to vacate the stadium. No arrests were made.
By the time the fans left, fewer than 200 onlookers remained for the final quarter and a half.
"When everybody left, it did feel kind of weird," said Tuscarora junior Dominic Clarke, an Ohio State recruit who opened the game with an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. "But I'd rather it be quiet when we're having a victory in hand than making everybody leave when we're down."
Frederick (0-1) has not beaten Tuscarora since the two teams started playing the rivalry game three years ago. The Cadets had a 21-0 win over the Titans last season, but it was forfeited because the Cadets used an ineligible player.
The loss of starting quarterback Deon Walker didn't help the Cadets, who struggled to find any offensive rhythm. Paramedics wheeled Walker off the field late in the third quarter because he aggravated a hip flexor injury, according to Ahearn.
Walker completed eight of 15 passes for 49 yards and one touchdown before he was replaced by senior Andrew Zimnik.
Tuscarora 40, Frederick 6 For Starters: Tuscarora junior quarterback Josh Marshall was a very solid 4 of 8 for 54 yards and two touchdowns passing in his first varsity start. He also had 13 carries and 94 yards. For Relievers: Frederick senior Andrew Zimnik replaced injured Deon Walker and was 3 of 8 for 27 yards passing. He also had 18 rushing yards on five carries.
