During his first summer in Georgetown Prep's football program, junior quarterback Jack Schryber heard a constant theme in Coach Dan Paro's speeches: "Make adversity your friend."
It appears Schryber -- and the rest of his teammates, for that matter -- listened.
After a costly third-quarter fumble allowed Paul VI to get back into last night's season opener, Schryber guided the Little Hoyas on a long touchdown drive and Georgetown Prep quickly pulled away for a 35-14 road victory.
"One thing Coach Paro has been talking about all summer long is dealing with adversity," said Schryber, who transferred from Langley. "It has to be our friend. If it's not, we'll suffer, and if it is, we'll prevail. And that's exactly what we did."
The Little Hoyas built a 13-0 lead in the first half, but Paro said he thought it could have been at least 20-0. That's because Georgetown Prep blocked a punt and forced two fumbles, but converted those Paul VI mistakes into just six points.
Intent on giving themselves breathing room in the second half, the Little Hoyas instead fumbled on their first play of the third quarter.
Paul VI quarterback Trevon Bennett ran 20 yards for a touchdown on the Panthers' next play, and just like that, it was 13-7.
"That," Paro said, "was a very scary moment."
On the ensuing drive, Schryber completed 3 of 4 passes for 42 yards and converted a quarterback sneak on fourth and inches.
Running back Kyle Sullivan eventually finished the 12-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
Seizing that momentum, the Little Hoyas' defense forced a quick three-and-out, and Bobby Gribbin returned a punt 47 yards to the Paul VI 4-yard-line, setting up another touchdown.
On the Panthers' next offensive play, Georgetown Prep senior Parker Mangold returned an interception 22 yards to put the Little Hoyas ahead 35-7.
"It was like we got hungrier and just kept going and going and going," Paro said. "Paul VI made a couple of mistakes and we took advantage of them."
Georgetown Prep 35, Paul VI 14 Looking Good: In only his second season of football, Paul VI senior wide receiver Dominic Sanders (6 feet 4, 204 pounds) could have a "breakout year," according to Panthers Coach Pat McGroarty. Sanders had five catches for 62 yards last night. Spreading the Wealth: Georgetown Prep quarterback Jack Schryber's nine completions went to six players.
