Complaint: The Aveo's strength is its weakness. It's nothing special.

It gets decent marks for ride, acceleration and handling. You won't walk home. But neither will you write sonnets praising its performance.

Head-turning quotient: It at least now looks like a member of the Chevrolet family. Considering the Aveo's previously amorphous personality, that is a very good thing.

Body style/layout: The Aveo is a front-engine, front-wheel drive, subcompact entry-level car available as a four-door sedan and as the tested, wagon-like Aveo5 hatchback. It primarily is designed for fuel economy and daily commuting.

Engine/transmissions: The tested 2009 Aveo5 2LT comes with a 1.6-liter, inline four-cylinder, 16-valve engine with electronically controlled variable-valve timing (for improved fuel economy) that develops 107 horsepower at 6,400 revolutions per minute and 106 foot-pounds of torque at 3,800 revolutions per minute. The engine is mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is optional.

Capacities: There are seats for five people. With the rear seats up, cargo space is 7.1 cubic feet. With those seats folded down, cargo space goes to 42 cubic feet (compared with a maximum 57 cubic feet in the more cleverly laid-out Honda Fit). The Aveo's fuel tank holds 12 gallons of recommended regular unleaded gasoline.

Mileage: My associate, Ria Manglapus, loved the fuel economy of this one, especially in the city where it got 27 miles per gallon. This is a right-lane car on the highway, where it gets 34 miles per gallon.

Safety: It's a small car. The laws of physics rule. Mass usually wins in contests between large and small. But the Aveo has other potential vulnerabilities: It has side air bags, but lacks head air bags. It offers antilock brakes as optional equipment. That equipment is standard on many rival subcompacts. It lacks electronic stability and traction control.

Price: The 2009 Aveo5 2LT starts at $14,860. The comparable 2009 Honda Fit Sport starts at $16,060. Dealer's invoice price on the base Aveo5 is $14,045. The Aveo5's price as tested is $15,520, including a $660 destination charge. Dealer's price as tested on that model is $14,703. The price as tested for the Honda Fit Sport is $16,730, including a $670 destination charge.
