Public Schools Report 146 National Merit Semifinalists

Montgomery County public schools have 146 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, 22 more than last year.

The semifinalists were selected from among high school juniors (now seniors) who were top scorers on the 2007 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. About 90 percent of the semifinalists will become finalists. Finalists will be considered for $2,500 National Merit scholarships in addition to corporate- and university-sponsored scholarships.

The Montgomery semifinalists are from 15 high schools:

· Bethesda-Chevy Chase (nine): Sanford L. Diehl, Richa Kalsi, Drew B. Kochman, Elaine G. Levey, Mark S. Reese, Soren B. Scott, Soraya I. Shehata, Laura K. Sheys, Max L. Valenstein.

· Montgomery Blair (43): Boyang An, Mandeep S. Bedi, Christopher P. Bodine, Violet K. Cavicchi, Abigail T. Cember, Samir R. Chainani, Jessica Chen, Kerry Cheng, Elaine T. Chung, Ramita Dewan, Robin Dreher, David W. Edelstein, Jiali Fang, Edward R. Gan, Jonathan S. Gootenberg, William J. Hess, Akimitsu S. Hogge, Emily Hsiao, Sally Huang, Sneha T. Kannan, Charles L. Kong, Eric S. Kuang, Alisa Y. Lu, Peter O. Myers, Kevin M. Rawlings, Stefanie A. Robey, Sahar Shahamatdar, Xin Shan, Stone Shen, Joshua A. Snyder, Elizabeth So, Kevin Z. Teng, Andrew J.
