In just its second year with a senior class, Marriotts Ridge may have announced its arrival as a Howard County contender.
The host Mustangs improved to 3-0 with a 38-6 victory over previously undefeated Reservoir last night. Their scoring margin in those three games is an eye-popping 127-12.
"I hope so," Marriotts Ridge wide receiver Kyle Williams said when asked if he felt his team was for real. "We just got to take each game at a time."
Williams, a senior, had six catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
"We had to get Kyle Williams the ball," Mustangs Coach Ken Hovet said. "He created some mismatches for us."
Williams's two scoring grabs came in the second half.
"I started catching the ball," said Williams, referring to a couple of drops in the first half. "Our running game [also] was moving the ball."
The ground game featured fellow senior Derek Coleman, who rushed 17 times for 90 yards. The speedster also caught three passes for 57 yards and a score.
"We were prepared," Coleman said. "We worked hard all week. We watched a lot of film."
Running the offense for Marriotts Ridge was quarterback Tim Blair. The senior was 13 for 26 for 197 yards and four touchdowns. Vince Testerman also had a big game, catching three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown and scoring on a 14-yard run.
The Mustangs got off to a fast start when Testerman caught a 26-yard pass from Blair a little over a minute into the game. The defense contributed a safety to make it 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The margin was pushed to 16-0 when Blair and Coleman connected from 34 yards in the second quarter.
Reservoir (2-1) got on the board midway through the second quarter when David Wilson rumbled into the end zone from nine yards out.
That would be as close as the Gators would get.
"We try to build each game, improve and keep going," said Hovet.
