BALTIMORE, Sept. 23 -- After missing nearly a month with a shoulder ailment, Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is close to returning, just in time for one more start.

Manager Dave Trembley said Guthrie will pitch in a three-inning simulated game on Wednesday, the last step before activating the pitcher from the 15-day disabled list. If all goes well, Trembley said Guthrie could be ready to start either on Saturday or for Sunday's season finale.

"He says he feels real good, he says he feels 100 percent," Trembley said.

Guthrie, who initially said he was suffering from arm fatigue, said he no longer feels pain when he throws. Guthrie, easily Baltimore's most consistent starting pitcher this season, has been on the DL since Sept. 15 (retroactive to Sept. 6) with a right shoulder impingement.

"I would never want to come back and put at risk the future for a start against an opponent" in the finale, Guthrie said.

Guthrie hasn't pitched since Aug. 29, but he has been steadfast about his desire to pitch again, saying he treated the rehab as if it were earlier in the season.

"It's just about being prepared and try to get back healthy," Guthrie said. "It just so happens that this time getting back healthy runs into a roadblock, which is the end of the season."

Injury Updates

Trembley said third baseman Melvin Mora's return this season is "questionable," especially after he received a report from Orioles head athletic trainer Richie Bancells that said Mora's hamstring injury has worsened. . . .

According to Trembley, right-hander Daniel Cabrera plans on seeking a second opinion on his right medial elbow sprain. Cabrera was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday (retroactive to Sept. 14).
