Guthrie Gets Assignment For Finale Vs. Toronto
Thursday, September 25, 2008
BALTIMORE, Sept. 24 -- After nearly a month of resting his sore arm while lobbying for the chance to pitch again, Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is expected to start against the Toronto Blue Jays in Sunday's season finale.
The decision came after Guthrie emerged pain-free after throwing more than 50 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday.
"It was about building a pitch count to allow myself to have a relatively decent pitch count," Guthrie said. "This is about getting stretched out."
Manager Dave Trembley said he was pleased with the way Guthrie looked, but the pitcher will be watched closely.
"We're going to limit, probably more than what he wants, the number of innings that he throws and the amount of pitches that he throws," Trembley said. "It will be a limited start for him, more like a spring training start."
Guthrie wants to throw once more in a light side session on Friday, which is in line with his usual routine before starts.
"I can tell you honestly, if there was any doubt at all amongst the coaching staff, the medical staff, that he wasn't completely 100 percent, we wouldn't do it," Trembley said.
Trembley said Orioles reliever Jim Miller likely is done for the season after suffering an injury just before he finished his warmup pitches on Tuesday night. Miller, who came to the Orioles from Colorado as part of the Rodrigo López trade, felt pain under his right armpit and woke up Wednesday with soreness and discoloration in the area. Doctors ruled out shoulder damage, though the exact nature of the injury is unknown. He is scheduled to have an MRI exam today.
Miller, a September call-up, went 0-2 with a 1.17 ERA in eight appearances and picked up a save for the Orioles.
Right-handed reliever Dennis Sarfate will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair his injured shoulder.
Third baseman Melvin Mora, out of the lineup Wednesday with a hamstring injury, said he is unsure whether he will return this season.
