Lectures, workshops, tours and other programs are available around the region this fall. They're free unless otherwise noted. Many require registration, so call ahead.

Through Oct. 13: "Beyond the Black Mountain, an Appreciation of Color, Pattern and Form in American Viewing Stones." Exhibit on loan from Jim and Alice Greaves. Oct. 11: Annual herb day. Discover significance of herbs in our lives and ways to use them for health, beauty care and cooking. Activities throughout day. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. U.S. Botanic Garden.

Oct 11: Herb day. Celebrate herbs and their uses. North Carolina Unit, Herb Society of America presents display on gardening for pet owners. Herb and perennial seed giveaway. 1-4 p.m. National Arboretum.

Oct. 11, 12, 13: 61st Annual Orchid Show and Sale. Lectures, exhibits and orchid sale. Oct. 11 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Oct. 12 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Oct. 13 10 a.m.-3 p.m. National Arboretum.
