BALTIMORE, Sept. 26 -- Right-hander Dennis Sarfate will undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday for a clavicle fracture he suffered in an early-season freak accident. Sarfate has pitched through the pain of the injury since the door of his sport-utility vehicle banged into his right shoulder.
"When you get out there in a game, your adrenaline goes and you're not really thinking about it," the reliever said on Friday.
But as the season wore on, he said he could feel the cumulative effect of the injury in the form of fatigue, though he maintained it did not affect his performance.
"Everything will be okay after the surgery and I'll be ready for spring training," said Sarfate, who went 4-3 with a 4.74 ERA.
Sarfate will be one of at least four Orioles pitchers expected to report to spring training after undergoing surgery within the last two years, joining Chris Ray, Danys Báez and Troy Patton.
Bass to Start
Manager Dave Trembley named right-hander Brian Bass the starter for Saturday's game. "I'd like to finish the season on a positive note, go out and throw well against these guys and take that into the offseason and prepare to come back to spring training next year as a starter," said Bass.
In three starts for the Orioles, Bass has a 5.40 ERA and has yet to pitch past the fifth inning. . . .
An MRI exam revealed that reliever Jim Miller suffered a tendon tear in his side. Miller faces a six-to-eight week recovery period though he is unsure of whether he will undergo surgery. Shortstop Juan Castro was a late scratch after straining his groin on Wednesday night. Melvin Mora, who has battled a hamstring injury, returned to the lineup as the designated hitter.
