METRO
Bus Driver in Fatal Crash on Job Four Months
The driver of a Metrobus involved in a fatal crash Friday night has been operating buses for four months, officials said yesterday. D.C. police are investigating the cause of the crash in Foggy Bottom that killed Bartlett M. Tabor, 55, of Alamo, Calif. and injured six others.
Metro officials are reviewing training procedures and considering stiffer penalties for minor infractions to see "what else we can do for safety improvements," said spokeswoman Candace Smith. The bus operator is on paid administrative leave during the investigation. The accident occurred at 8:15 p.m. when the bus was heading west on Virginia Avenue NW and struck the minivan taxi traveling south on 19th Street, police said.
C Street also comes into that intersection, which has three traffic lights.
Three other passengers in the taxi were taken to a hospital and later released. The drivers of the bus and the taxi and a firefighter who came to the scene were also injured.
