Lohse was 15-6 with a 3.78 ERA this season and led the staff with 200 innings. He agreed to a one-year, $4.25 million contract on March 14.

His new deal calls for a $1.25 million signing bonus and salaries of $7,125,000 next year, $8,875,000 in 2010 and $11,875,000 in each of the final two seasons. He also gets a full no-trade clause.

St. Louis's pitching depth is uncertain. Chris Carpenter, the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner, missed nearly all of the past two seasons with injuries.

· MARLINS: Florida released RHP Sergio Mitre, who is recovering from elbow surgery.

Mitre underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery on July 15, missed the entire 2008 season and is not expected to return until midseason next year at the earliest.

Mitre went 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA for Florida last year.

· PADRES: Bud Black is coming back as manager of San Diego despite the club's worst finish in 15 seasons. The Padres finished 63-99, 21 games behind the Dodgers.
