The Prince George's County school district has had four superintendents since 1999.
June 1999: Prince George's Board of Education hires Iris T. Metts, Delaware's secretary of education.
Spring 2002: After years of tension, the board fires Metts when the two sides fail to agree on terms for her resignation. The state legislature dissolves the elected board, replacing it with an appointed board that reinstates Metts.
February 2003: Metts decides not to seek renewal of her contract.
April 2003: Board hires former Yonkers superintendent Andre J. Hornsby.
May 2005: Hornsby resigns while under federal investigation. The district's top personnel officer, Howard Burnett, succeeds him as interim superintendent. Hornsby was convicted this year of wire fraud, evidence tampering and obstruction of justice.
March 2006: Board hires John E. Deasy, a superintendent in Southern California.
