GETTING THERE: Scottsville is about 140 miles from Washington. Take Interstate 66 west to Route 29 south to Charlottesville. Merge onto the U.S. 29 south/Route 250 west bypass toward I-64. Take I-64 east to Route 20 south. Go 18 miles; Route 20 becomes Valley Street.

WHERE TO STAY: James River Inn (3057 White Rock Rd., 434-286-2100,, $110-$185), High Meadows Vineyard Inn (55 High Meadows Lane, 434-286-2218,, $150-$300) or Chester Bed & Breakfast (243 James River Rd., 434-286-3960,, $165-$225).

WHERE TO EAT: At Lumpkin's Restaurant and Motel (1075 Valley St., 434-286-3690, closed Wednesdays and Sundays), meals are $5.75-$12.75. At 330 Valley Street (same address, 434-286-7117), entrees cost $9.95-$15.95. Pee Wee's Pit Barbecue (485 Valley St., 434-286-7744) has $5 sandwiches and $6.95 meals.

WHAT TO DO: A free Rhythm on the River Concert on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Canal Basin Square features the Rogan Brothers and the Little Mountain Boys (bluegrass, country, rock).

Get a walking tour brochure at Victory Hall, 401 Valley St., and do the Levee Walk from Canal Basin Square (249 Main St.). Visit the free Scottsville Museum (290 Main St., 434-286-2247,; open April-October, Saturdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sundays 1-5 p.m.

For the free Hatton Ferry (434-296-1492,, take Route 625; Fridays-Sundays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 15-Oct. 15. Nearby, James River Runners (10082 Hatton Ferry Rd., 434-286-2338, rents tubes, kayaks and canoes; open April-October.

Scottsville's Farmer s Market (Valley and Main streets, 434-286-3750) runs May-October on Saturdays 8-11 a.m. and Thursdays 3-7 p.m.
