Nintendo to Boost U.S. Shipments

Nintendo will increase shipments of its top-selling Wii and DS video-game players to the U.S. in the fourth quarter to keep up with holiday demand.

More Wii consoles will be available in stores starting in October, said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo's U.S. operations. Wii shipments should increase about 50 percent and DS handheld shipments are projected to rise about 10 percent, he said.

Nintendo is trying to avoid shortages that limited sales in the U.S. last year. The company ran out of the DS players in mid-December, Fils-Aime said. Sales of both game machines have continued to exceed the company's forecasts, making it difficult to keep up with demand, he said.

AIRLINES

On-Time Performance Improves

U.S. airlines' on-time performance and baggage handling improved in August, compared with the corresponding month last year, the Transportation Department said. JetBlue Airways had the worst on-time performance in August, while Hawaiian Airlines had the best.

The DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics said the 19 carriers reporting on-time performance recorded an overall on-time arrival rate of 78.4 percent in August, higher than the 71.7 percent recorded a year earlier and 75.7 percent recorded in July of this year.

The airlines overall posted a mishandled baggage rate of 4.98 reports per 1,000 passengers in August, down from the rate a year earlier of 7.58 reports per 1,000 passengers but higher than the rate of 4.86 reports per 1,000 passengers recorded in July.
