Two teenagers were shot and wounded near a Northwest Washington recreation center late last night in an attack that sent bullets into a nearby apartment house and drew return fire from a security officer, authorities said.
The gunfire occurred about 10:20 p.m. near 14th and Clifton streets, outside the Mary and Daniel Loughran Clubhouse at 2500 14th St. The building normally closes at 9 p.m.
A gunman opened fire after approaching a group of youths in the parking lot of the facility. Police knew of no motive last night. One youth was hit in the leg and the other in the buttocks, police said. The wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, police said. Officials said the youths were 14 to 16 years old.
"It's insane," said D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), who went to the scene. "What kind of madman targets two kids in front of a clubhouse?"
A special police officer working nearby fired at the assailant, authorities said. It was not clear if the officer hit anyone.
A handgun was found nearby but it was unclear if it had been used.
