Prayer on the Waves

Representatives of the Catholic, Jewish, Islamic and Mormon faiths offered prayers at dawn at Huntington Beach, Calif., in what the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange called the Blessing of the Waves. "May they hang 10 on thy oceanic bounty and, if it be in accordance with thy gnarly plan, may they not wipe out," prayed the Rev. Christian Mondor, right.

IN FACT Approximately 400 people witnessed the blessing, but only a couple of dozen hit the waves afterward.
