Building Group Awards Scholarships To Prince George's Community College

Eight county students have been awarded full-tuition scholarships worth $6,000 each for two years of study Prince George's Community College.

The students will be recognized next Thursday during a reception at a scholarship ceremony sponsored by the Apartment and Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington and property owners of low- to moderate-income apartment communities. The college and the association will host the reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Marlboro Gallery on the Largo campus.

Recipients of scholarships from the association are:

Prince George's Community College students Christianah A. Adewuyi of Lanham, Nusirat Balogun of Mount Rainier, Redeat Berhanu of Laurel, Adaku L. Ihekweme of Upper Marlboro, Isha Kamara of Landover and Tenika Phillips of Suitland. Other scholarship winners are Central High School student Even Reeves of Upper Marlboro and Parkdale High School student Syeda Silkandar of Lanham.

Since 1996, the association has sponsored nearly 90 scholarships and contributed more than $500,000 to the college. Applicants must be Prince George's residents who have been accepted for admission and hold a minimum grade-point average of 2.5. Preference is given to applicants residing in apartment communities owned or managed by members of the Apartment and Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington.

U-Md. Professor Emeritus Given Award for Service in Public Relations

James E. Grunig, a professor emeritus of communication at the University of Maryland, was honored last month in Chatham, Mass., with the Arthur W. Page Society's Distinguished Service Award during the 25th annual conference of the Arthur W. Page Society of public relations executives.

During Grunig's more than 30 years in public relations, he has published more than 200 articles, books, book chapters, reports and papers and was the editor of the book "Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management."

Grunig also has developed theories that track the growth and development of public relations and the evolution of the field into one that emphasizes relationship building.

Police Department and Crime Solvers Honor Eight Detectives of the Year

Eight Detectives of the Year were honored recently by the Prince George's County Police Department and the county Crime Solvers Board of Directors.

Those recognized were selected by their district commanders for demonstrating exemplary skills.

The following investigators were recognized as their district's Detective of the Year:

Gregory Fuoco, District I; Wendy Ewing, District II; Charles Richardson, District III; Kenneth Doyle, District IV; Mark Roller, District V; Michael Eubanks, District VI; Matthew Albertson, Narcotics Enforcement Division; and Troy Harding, Criminal Investigations Division.

Cinemax to Debut Late-Night Series Based on Fiction of County Author

Cinemax will debut "Zane's Sex Chronicles," a late-night series based on best-selling author and Prince George's County resident Kristina Laferne Roberts, who writes erotic fiction under the pseudonym Zane and launched Largo-based Strebor Books International, tomorrow.

Oscar nominee and two-time Emmy winner Suzanne de Passe is the executive producer of the series, which will air at midnight and follow the lives of five female friends in New York.
