Rod Dyachenko scored off a corner kick in the closing moments last night as D.C. United, using mostly reserves, earned a 2-2 tie with Saprissa in a CONCACAF Champions League match in San Jose, Costa Rica.
United led for almost the entire game, thanks to Francis Doe's goal in the sixth minute, but Saprissa scored in the 80th and 86th minutes.
Dyachenko then used his upper body to redirect Marc Burch's corner kick into the left side to give United (0-3-1) its first point in the group stage of the regional championship with two games remaining.
After Doe scored on an 18-yard shot that skidded under goalkeeper Jose Porras, Alejandro Alpizar missed a penalty kick in the 33rd minute and an offside call negated an apparent Saprissa goal early in the second half.
Saprissa (2-1-1) scored the equalizer when United's Pat Carroll deflected a cross past oncoming goalie Zach Wells, allowing Ariel Santana to tap it into the net from the goal line.
Six minutes later, Wells slapped a cross to Alpizar, whose header hit the crossbar. Cesar Elizondo side-volleyed in the rebound.
United returns to MLS play Sunday at Houston.
