Missing Girl's Mother Charged With Murder
ORLANDO -- The mother of a 3-year-old girl whose disappearance four months ago has caused a media sensation was arrested Tuesday and charged with killing her.
A grand jury indicted Casey Anthony on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter and four counts of lying to investigators about the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee, State Attorney Lawson Lamar said. The mother is being held without bail.
Prosecutors said no decision has been made on whether Anthony could face the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder.
The child's body has not been found despite an exhaustive search.
Toxicology Tests Clear Bus Driver
SACRAMENTO -- Toxicology tests show that the driver of a charter bus that crashed on a rural Northern California road, killing nine, was not drunk or on drugs at the time, prosecutors said. Quintin Watts, 52, had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after the bus overturned Oct. 5 on a two-lane road. He was being held at a prison in Tracy on suspicion of driving without a proper license while authorities continued their investigation.
No Trial for N.Y. Killing Suspect
NEW YORK -- Prosecutors in the case of a mentally ill patient accused of hacking a psychotherapist to death with a meat cleaver decided not to challenge a psychiatrist's finding that the suspect is not mentally fit to stand trial. David Tarloff, 40, will be turned over to the state and sent to a mental institution, where he will be held indefinitely, said Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon. Tarloff had faced the prospect of life in a maximum-security prison in the Feb. 12 death of Kathryn Faughey, 56, in her Upper East Side office.
Remote-Control Fix for Hubble
NASA engineers say they know how to fix the broken Hubble Space Telescope: They have to wake up computer parts that have been sleeping in space for more than 18 years. On Wednesday, a team of about 40 engineers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., will start a complicated remote-control fix of a major glitch. That defect stopped the telescope from capturing and beaming down pictures. Hubble should be able to send stunning astronomy photos back to Earth by Friday, officials said.
