Former Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick has pleaded guilty to drunken driving and other charges.

Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie said Vick, 24, also was convicted yesterday of eluding police and driving on the wrong side of the road.

The brother of former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was arrested in June after fleeing from a bicycle patrol officer who saw him and a woman involved in a dispute. Vick was stopped minutes later.

A judge suspended a 12-month jail sentence on the DUI charge, but Vick must pay $530 in fines and lose his license for a year.

Vick was dropped from the Virginia Tech team in 2006 after a series of problems. The Miami Dolphins released him a year later.

· BASEBALL: Yankees Manager Joe Girardi and co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner lent their support to pitcher Joba Chamberlain, arrested last weekend near Lincoln, Neb., on suspicion of drunken driving.

Chamberlain, 23, is to appear in court Dec. 17. His blood-alcohol content level was 0.134 at the time of his arrest; the legal limit in Nebraska is 0.08. . . .

Boston third baseman Mike Lowell has had surgery on his right hip. Red Sox spokesman John Blake said last year's World Series MVP wanted surgery now to have time to recover before spring training. . . .

Oakland secured some stability in the middle of its infield, agreeing on a two-year contract with second baseman Mark Ellis that guarantees him about $11 million.

The A's also have a club option in the deal that could keep Ellis, 31, around through the 2011 season. . . .

General Manager Jim Hendry and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a four-year contract extension through the 2012 season.

The move came following the Cubs' best regular season (97-64) since 1945.

· RECRUITING: Darin Drakeford, a senior linebacker at Theodore Roosevelt High, committed to Maryland yesterday, choosing the Terrapins over Illinois. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Drakeford was a second-team All-Met last year, when he set a school record with 22 sacks. He is one of top all-around athletes in D.C. public schools, also starring on the Rough Riders' basketball team that advanced to the City Title Game last March.
