An 18-year-old District man was ordered held without bail on a murder charge yesterday after he allegedly told police he shot a teenager Sunday in the 10th homicide of the year in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast Washington.

The shooter, identified as Dangelo Johnson in a police affidavit, told investigators he fatally shot 17-year-old Karon Shannon because the youth muttered an expletive at him on the street, according to the affidavit, made public in D.C. Superior Court yesterday.

Police said the suspect and victim both lived in Trinidad; Johnson in the 1200 block of Holbrook Terrace, Shannon in the 1300 block of Orren Street. The shooting was in the 1200 block of Simms Place.

Two witnesses identified Johnson as the person who opened fire on Shannon and a 15-year-old girl as they were standing on Simms Place about 7:30 p.m., according to the affidavit. Shannon was hit by several bullets. The girl suffered a wound to her left leg that police said is not life-threatening.

Police said Johnson was arrested Tuesday at a motel on New York Avenue NE in a room he had rented under a false name. They said they found a revolver in the room matching witnesses' description of the gun used in the shooting.

According to the affidavit, Johnson told police he was on Simms Place "asking some people he knew for weed." Johnson admitted he "pulled out his gun and shot [Shannon] multiple times" after the teenager called him a foul name, the affidavit says.
