Here is a local sampling of science lesson time for upper elementary grades:

Arlington County: Schools are advised to teach three hours and 45 minutes a week.

Charles County: Schools are advised to teach about two hours a week.

The District: Schools are encouraged to teach a minimum of three hours and 45 minutes a week.

Fairfax County: Schools are advised to teach three hours weekly plus have an hour of science-related reading and writing.

Montgomery County: Weekly instruction ranges from 60 minutes to more than 200 minutes.

Prince William County: Instruction averages four hours a week.

St. Mary's County: Instruction averages just under two hours a week.
