A weekly playlist for the listener with a one-track mind.
Alexis Taylor: "Coming Up" (Paul McCartney cover) We're pretty sure the Hot Chip vocalist is covering McCartney's solo version of this song, not the better-known Wings rendition. Because for some reason Wings gets no love, not even the ironic hipster kind of love. As with most things, we blame Heather Mills.
Beyoncé: "At Last" Remember when Christina Aguilera did her "I told you people I could sing" cover of this Etta James song? And it was so good that there was never a need for any of her contemporaries to ever cover it again, not even Beyoncé (who does just that on this track from her upcoming period film "Cadillac Records")? So . . . yeah.
Akon featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy: "I'm So Paid" (remix) Akon's new track celebrates the joys of Italian leather, paid goons and other totems of conspicuous consumption. Possibly, the timing on this one could have been better.
The BPA: "Toe Jam" (Database Remix) Fatboy Slim enlists David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal for this track from his Brighton Port Authority project, remixed here by the Brazilian duo Database. Tragically, this version is virtually Byrne-free.
The Replacements: "Satellite" This unearthed bonus track, taken from the recent bumper crop of Mats reissues, marks just about the only time they let former bassist Tommy Stinson sing. Stinson, now occasionally the bassist for Guns N' Roses, sounds like he recorded this track in a basement while being attacked by cats, but it's still probably as good as anything on "Chinese Democracy."
