A Hazardous Punishment
QUEEN ST. NE,1200 block, Oct. 16. A Humane Society officer responding to a call found a brown-and-white pit bull tied to the railing of a house by a leash attached to a prong-style training collar. The owner said that the dog was chained as punishment for aggressive behavior. The officer explained the hazards of chaining and discussed humane training methods. During a follow-up visit the next day, the dog was inside the home.
Possum Killed With Shovel
JEFFERSON ST. NW, 100 block, Oct. 15. The Humane Society received a call about a possum that was struck in the head and killed with a shovel. The case under investigation.
Dogs Left Alone in Home
14TH ST. SE, 1700 block, Oct. 20. Investigating a call, a Humane Society officer found three dogs inside a home that had many broken and boarded windows. The owners were not home; a notice was left to contact the society immediately. The case is under investigation.
Tabby for Adoption
EMERSON ST. NW,400 block, Oct. 19. A 3-year-old tabby found as a stray was made available for adoption at the shelter.

Cat Taken to Medical Center
OXON HILL, Marcy Ave., 900 block, Oct. 9. Responding to a report about a cat stuck in a laundry room of an apartment building, an animal control officer with the Prince George's County Animal Management Division found an 8-month-old cat that appeared to have a broken leg. The animal had dried paint on its legs and head. The cat was taken to the league's medical center for treatment. Surgery was performed by inserting a pin into the fractured bone, and the dried paint was shaved off its head and legs. The cat is expected to recover and will be made available for adoption.
Puppy Recovers From Virus
ANACOSTIA RD. SE, 100 block, Oct. 16. A woman took a 5-month-old pit bull to the league's medical center because it was lethargic and vomiting. The dog was diagnosed with parvovirus, a disease that is fatal if untreated but that can be prevented with routine vaccinations. The puppy was hospitalized and went home a week later.
Cats Need Homes
The Animal Rescue League will offer cats for adoption from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Big Bad Woof pet supply store, 117 Carroll St. NW. The adoption fee is $65 and includes neutering, vaccinations and checkups. For information, call 202-726-2556.
