The NBA schedule-makers presented the Wizards with an odd flow of games for the opening month of the season, one that will include only seven games during the first 18 days.
That's fine for creating plenty of time for practice but not so great when it comes to developing a rhythm for real game situations. For players who see only limited action in a particular game, such as guard Juan Dixon, who played eight minutes during Wednesday's season-opening loss to the Nets, the extra days between games can feel like weeks.
"That's what guys were talking about [Thursday night], that there are a lot of days between these games," said Dixon, who missed the first four games of the preseason with a calf injury. "For us to be in a good rhythm, you like to be out there competing against other teams so we can work on execution at both ends of the floor. We've been practicing hard, it's been intense, but I'm sure all of us, players and coaches, would like get out there on the floor in games right now."
Dixon said the key for himself and other reserves will be staying sharp and taking advantage of every opportunity to play. Coach Eddie Jordan played all 12 available players Wednesday night and may continue to go deep into his bench as he looks for the right combinations.
"You want to get a rhythm and have Coach be able to trust you and if he puts you in the first half you want to get minutes in the second half, but we have 13 guys on this team that can play and contribute," Dixon said. "So I'm sure that whatever direction Coach goes, he's doing what's best for the team."
