MARYLAND | VIRGINIA | DCIAA | WCAC
4A West Region
In: Sherwood (9-0), Quince Orchard (8-1)
In with a win: Wootton (6-3), Churchill (6-3), Northwest (5-4)
Needs help: Gaithersburg (5-4), Springbrook (5-4), Blair (5-4)
The skinny: Sherwood will be the top seed and Quince Orchard is locked into the No. 2 spot. The Wootton-Churchill winner will be the third seed. If Northwest beats Walter Johnson (1-8), the Jaguars will be the fourth seed. If Northwest loses and Churchill wins, Wootton is likely to get in as the fourth seed, though it is far from certain.
4A South Region
In: Eleanor Roosevelt (9-0), C.H. Flowers (8-1), Suitland (7-2)
In with a win: Oxon Hill (6-3), Wise (6-3)
The skinny: Eleanor Roosevelt will be the top seed, with Flowers set at No. 2. Suitland can secure the third seed by beating Bladensburg (4-5). Oxon Hill and Wise play Saturday with the winner getting in and the loser turning it their jerseys.
4A North Region
In: Linganore (9-0), Perry Hall (7-2)
In with a win: Kenwood (6-3)
Needs help: Woodlawn (5-4), Westminster (5-4), Thomas Johnson (5-4)
The skinny: Linganore has clinched the top seed, with Perry Hall set at No. 2. Then it gets jumbled. Kenwood is the third seed if it beats Hereford (7-2) but probably is out if it loses. It will be close between Woodlawn and Thomas Johnson if both teams win. Woodlawn plays Parkville (1-8), Thomas Johnson plays Frederick (3-6).
4A East Region
In: Arundel (8-1), Old Mill (8-1), North County (8-1)
Needs help: Severna Park (6-3), Broadneck (6-3)
The skinny: Arundel, Old Mill and North County are vying for the top three seeds. If all win -- Arundel plays Southern (4-5), Old Mill plays South River (3-6) and North County plays Broadneck -- North County likely would be the third seed, with the outcome of Meade-Northeast determining the order of Arundel and Old Mill. Broadneck must beat North County to have a chance and would be in with a win and a loss by Severna Park to Chesapeake (2-7). If Broadneck and Severna Park win, it will be tight for the fourth spot, with Meade-Northeast again the key game to watch.
3A West Region
In: Seneca Valley (9-0), Urbana (7-2), Tuscarora (7-2)
In with a win: Damascus (6-3), Paint Branch (6-3)
The skinny: Seneca Valley can earn the top seed by beating Einstein (5-4), with Urbana and Tuscarora likely heading for a first-round matchup. Damascus and Paint Branch play Friday with the winner getting in.
3A South Region
In: Huntingtown (8-1)
In with a win: Friendly (7-2), Westlake (7-2), Lackey (6-3)
Needs help: Chopticon (6-3)
The skinny: Huntingtown can clinch the top seed by beating Leonardtown (2-7). Friendly likely will be the top seed if it beats Central (5-4) and Huntingtown loses. If Huntingtown wins, Friendly would be the second seed if it beats Central. Chopticon needs to beat Northern (3-6) and have one of the teams ahead of it lose ¿ preferably Westlake or Lackey.
3A East Region
In: Wilde Lake (8-1)
In with a win: Fallston (6-3), Howard (6-3), Stephen Decatur (6-3)
Needs help: Long Reach (6-3), Annapolis (5-4), Reservoir (5-4)
The skinny: Wilde Lake will be the top seed. Fallston plays Rising Sun (3-6), Howard plays Mount Hebron (3-6) and Stephen Decatur plays Snow Hill (6-3). The best hope for the teams needing help is to win and have Stephen Decatur lose.
2A West Region
In: Century (9-0), Clarksburg (9-0), Middletown (6-3), Liberty (7-2)
The skinny: Century and Clarksburg will be the top two seeds, with Middletown and Liberty bound for the third and fourth seeds in some order. Clarksburg needs Century to lose to Liberty in order to have a chance at the top seed.
2A South Region
In: River Hill (9-0), North Point (8-1)
In with a win: Gwynn Park (8-1), Douglass (7-2)
Needs help: Patuxent (7-2)
The skinny: Perhaps the most competitive region in the state. Gwynn Park plays Douglass on Saturday with the winner getting in. Patuxent would be in with a win over Great Mills (0-9) and a Gwynn Park victory.
1A South Region
In: Dunbar-Baltimore (8-1), Reginald Lewis (7-2), W.E.B. DuBois (6-3)
In with a win: Glenelg (4-5)
Needs help: Forestville (4-5)
The skinny: Dunbar will be the top seed and Reginald Lewis the second seed. W.E.B. DuBois is in as the third or fourth seed. Glenelg will get the fourth playoff berth if it upsets River Hill (9-0) on Friday. If Glenelg loses, Forestville almost certainly will get in regardless of its outcome against Fairmont Heights (0-9) on Saturday.
AAA Division 6 Northwestern Region
In: Woodbridge (9-0), Battlefield (9-0), Hylton (6-3)
Likely in with a win: Osbourn (5-4)
Needs help: Mountain View (5-4), Franklin County (4-5), Gar-Field (4-5), Osbourn Park (4-5)
The skinny: Woodbridge and Battlefield have clinched the top two seeds (order undetermined) and first-round home games. Hylton is locked into the third seed. Then it gets interesting. Osbourn likely will get it in if it beats Osbourn Park, but it is possible Mountain View could get in ahead of Osbourn if it beats Massaponax (4-5). Franklin County, Gar-Field and Osbourn Park are mathematically alive but would need to win and have everyone else lose in order to get in.
AAA Division 5 Northwestern Region
In: Brooke Point (8-1), William Fleming (8-1)
In with a win: Fauquier (7-2), Liberty (7-2)
Likely in with a win: Potomac (5-4)
Needs help: George Washington-Danville (5-4), Colonial Forge (6-3)
The skinny: Brooke Point will clinch the top seed if it beats Colonial Forge or if William Fleming loses to Patrick Henry-Roanoke (1-8). The winner of Friday's game between Fauquier and Liberty will be the third seed. Potomac likely will get in if it beats Freedom-Woodbridge (2-7).
AA Division 4 Region I
In: Chancellor (9-0), Powhatan (8-1), Tabb (7-2), Courtland (7-2)
The skinny: Chancellor will be the top seed. Powhatan will be the second seed if it beats Brunswick (7-2), in which case Courtland would be the third seed if it beats James Monroe (8-1).
AA Division 4 Region II
In: Broad Run (9-0), Potomac Falls (8-1), James Wood (8-2)
In with a win: Loudoun County (5-4)
Needs help: Louisa (6-3), Sherando (6-3)
The skinny: Broad Run can clinch the top seed by beating Park View (3-6) or if Potomac Falls loses to Dominion (1-8). James Wood, which is idle, is the third seed. If Loudoun County beats Heritage (6-3), it will vault over Louisa and Sherando in the standings and earn the fourth seed. If Loudoun County loses, Louisa is in by beating William Monroe (0-9). Sherando, which plays Kettle Run (0-9), needs Loudoun County and Louisa to lose.
AA Division 3 Region I
In: Poquoson (7-2), James Monroe (8-1)
In with a win: Brunswick (7-2)
Needs help: Nottoway (6-3), Bruton (6-3)
The skinny: Poquoson and James Monroe will be the top two seeds, though their order is not certain. Brunswick can pass Nottoway and Bruton if it beats Powhatan (8-1).
AA Division 3 Region II
In: Handley (8-1), Monticello (8-1), Briar Woods (7-2), Millbrook (6-4)
The skinny: Handley can earn the top seed by either beating Brentsville (2-7) or with a Monticello loss to Charlottesville (1-8). Briar Woods will be the third seed. Millbrook, which is idle this week, will be the fourth seed.
A Division 2 Region B
In: Clarke County, Gretna, Appomattox
In with a win: Madison County
Needs help: Dan River
The skinny: Gretna will be the top seed. Clarke County, with its regular season complete, will be the second seed and will host Appomattox if it beats Chatham (2-7). Madison County can secure its spot by beating Manassas Park (2-7) or if Dan River loses to Nelson County (2-7). It is possible for Madison County to lose and get in even if Dan River wins.
D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association
In: H.D. Woodson (4-4), Dunbar (5-5), Coolidge (7-2)
In with a win: Ballou (4-4), Anacostia (1-8)
The skinny: H.D. Woodson will be the top seed in the East Division, with the Friday's Ballou-Anacostia winner earning the second seed. Dunbar will be the top seed from the West, with Coolidge in as the second seed.
Washington Catholic Athletic Conference
In: Good Counsel (9-0), DeMatha (7-2), St. John's (6-3)
In with a win: Bishop McNamara (5-4)
Needs help: Gonzaga (2-7)
The skinny: Good Counsel, DeMatha and St. John's are locked into the top three seeds in that order. McNamara is in if it beats DeMatha or if Gonzaga loses to St. John's. But if McNamara loses and Gonzaga wins, there will be a three-way tie for fourth place between McNamara, Gonzaga and the winner of the O'Connell-Paul VI Catholic game. In that case, Gonzaga would win the tiebreaker by virtue of having a victory over the third-place team, St. John's. Regardless of who wins between O'Connell and Paul VI, that team would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker with McNamara (which beat both of those teams).
