Complaint: The LR3 V-8 HSE has commendable talent for the outback. But if it isn't going to be driven in that environment, it becomes a huge waste of money. This is not a ride for the city, where it sucks too much fuel and occupies too much space.
Ride, acceleration and handling: Good in all three categories on-road, but not exceptional in any manner that would lead me to choose it over a lower-priced vehicle with less capability. Exceptional off-road prowess.
Head-turning quotient: It's what it is -- a big, expensive-looking SUV.
Body style/layout: The LR3 V-8 HSE is a full-size, all-wheel-drive, front-engine, luxury sport-utility vehicle with ladder-frame construction and step roof (elevated rear roof) designed to provide more headroom for rear-seat passengers. It is an off-road vehicle that feels out of its element on city streets.
Engine/transmission: It comes with a 4.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 that develops 300 horsepower at 5,500 revolutions per minute and 315 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission that can be shifted automatically or manually.
Capacities: There are seats for seven people. Maximum cargo capacity is 90 cubic feet. Maximum payload, the weight of what can be carried onboard, is 1,695 pounds. The LR3 V-8 HSE can be equipped to tow a trailer weighing 7,700 pounds. The fuel tank holds 22.8 gallons of required premium unleaded gasoline.
Mileage: You're looking at 12 miles per gallon in the city and barely 17 mpg on the highway.
Safety: Standard equipment includes four-wheel disc brakes with antilock protection, side and head air bags, electronic stability and traction control.
Price: The base price on the 2008 LR3 V-8 HSE is $54,025. Dealer's invoice price on that model is $49,938. Price as tested is $57,550, including $2,750 in options (premium leather seats, navigation and black lacquer interior trim) and a $775 destination charge. Dealer's price as tested is $53,216. Prices are sourced from Land Rover, Edmunds.com and Cars.com, an affiliate of The Washington Post.
Purse-strings note: Compare with Hummer H2, VW Touareg, and Porsche Cayenne. The bottom line is that if you are just looking for seven-passenger transportation, this is an expensive way to go.
