Like those featured in the Nov. 2 Post Magazine, I was fortunate enough to attend a semester abroad -- in my case in Copenhagen. While I had traveled abroad many times, I had not thought that I could simply up and leave the comforts of America for an extended period. Expanded cable TV, huge supermarkets, my family.
The morning of Sept. 12, 2001, I felt differently. I had to leave. Not because this new, battered America frightened me but because what if I never left the comforts of home to explore? So I applied to study in Denmark, and every day since then I have been rewarded with the lessons that Copenhagen taught me.
Not only did I make lasting friends, learn a crazy amount of Danish and visit exciting places (such as Berlin and Moscow) during my stay, I also learned that as an American, it is my duty to question why things are the way they are in my country. As imperfect as we are as a nation, studying abroad also made me realize that there is no place I would rather call home.
So I say to every college student: Do something great for America: Leave!
