PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Bodies of 2 Men Who Were Shot Found in Cemetery
Saturday, November 8, 2008
The bodies of two men who had been shot were found yesterday in a cemetery in the Coral Hills-Suitland area of Prince George's County, county police said.
The discovery was made about 8 a.m. at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in the 4000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, police said.
A police spokesman said a car with broken windows was found near the cemetery entrance, and investigators were trying to determine whether the vehicle was connected to the men.
Officer Henry Tippett, a police spokesman, identified the men as Mario N. Shepard, 26, of Barnsdale Drive in Cheltenham and Kelvin A. Franklin, 23, of Cheryl Drive in Upper Marlboro. They were found by cemetery workers about 200 yards into the burial ground, he said.
Tippett said that it was not known when or where the men were killed and that they could have been shot before being brought to the cemetery, which is about a half-mile from the borderline between the county and Southeast Washington.
The discovery was not the first intrusion of violence this year at the cemetery, where, according to a historical Web site, at least five U.S. senators, half a dozen U.S. representatives and a Supreme Court justice are buried.
In January, Cedar Hill was the scene of a shootout between police and a prisoner who had overpowered guards at a hospital and fled with two guns. The inmate was fatally wounded.
