Few economic data are coming out this week. The highlight is retail sales figures for October, to be released Friday, and the numbers are expected to be atrocious. Economists expect a 1.4 percent decline in sales, worse than the 1.2 percent decline in September. But with no other major data due out in the week, economy-watchers will have plenty of time to obsess over who will be President-elect Barack Obama's Treasury secretary, a decision that could come this week, as could the naming of other key members of his economic team. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke plans to give a speech Friday about coordination among central banks -- a timely topic, given that the Fed enacted a coordinated rate cut with counterparts overseas last month. -- Neil Irwin
