STAR OF THE DAY

SHAYLIN O'CONNELL

MH-OH, Loudoun County, Senior

O'Connell has been dominant for the No. 2 Raiders all season, and yesterday she had 12 kills and five blocks in a 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 Virginia AA Region II final win over Western Albemarle. Loudoun County, the three-time defending region volleyball champion, next hosts Region I runner-up Jamestown on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.

MEANINGFUL VICTORY

Playing without head football coach John Robinette, who was not on the sideline Friday night because of what Freedom-Woodbridge Athletic Director Brad Qualls called "a personnel matter," the Eagles landed one of their biggest victories, beating Virginia AAA Cardinal District rival Potomac, 22-21, in double overtime. The win gave Freedom (4-6) bragging rights in what has been dubbed the "Rumble on Route 1" and kept the Panthers out of the playoffs. Potomac needed to beat Freedom to earn the final Northwest Region Division 5 playoff berth. Robinette and Qualls declined to elaborate on the reason for Robinette's absence when reached by phone yesterday, but both said the coach is expected back next season.
