Penn State suddenly found itself without a chair on which to sit in the game of BCS musical chairs. Following a last-second loss to Iowa on Saturday, the Nittany Lions (9-1) fell four spots to No. 7 in the Associated Press top 25. They now stand at the back of the line of one-loss teams still hoping to sneak into the national title game. . . .
With a 59-28 victory over Washington State, Arizona (6-3) became bowl-eligible for the first time since 1998. Washington State, on the other hand, became the first team in Pacific-10 history to allow 500 points in a single season, and the Cougars still have three games to play. . . .
North Carolina sophomore tight end Zack Pianalto broke his left fibula on a touchdown catch Saturday and is out indefinitely. . . .
Virginia freshman Robert Randolph replaced senior Yannick Reyering at place kicker prior to Saturday's loss at Wake Forest. Randolph nailed a 33-yard field goal and two extra points. Virginia Coach Al Groh said the Cavaliers need more results from that position and will go with Randolph at least for the near future. "We're going to go down that direction and see where it leads us," Groh said.
