RB Clinton Portis addressed his knee injury yesterday on John Thompson's radio show, saying it was a second-degree sprain of a medial collateral ligament.

"Right now I can't straighten it out," Portis said of his left leg. "I just started bending it today, so hopefully by the end of the week. We've got five days, so hopefully I'll be ready."

The Redskins play Dallas on Sunday night at FedEx Field.

Portis said he tweaked his knee twice against Pittsburgh on Nov. 3, once on a hit early in the game and later during a pileup.

Portis added he and backup Ladell Betts would be game-time decisions and that he would not play if he thought he could not be effective.

Betts is "probably in a little bit better position to be active as the week goes on," Coach Jim Zorn said on his weekly radio appearance. "He is nowhere 100 percent yet, but I think he looks like he's going to participate in practice, where Clinton won't participate in practice for the first couple days. It's kind of a mixed bag right now."

ยท ROOKIE HOPEFULS: With top WR Santana Moss slowed by a hamstring injury, the Redskins have expressed hope rookies Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly could make significant contributions in the final seven games.

Thomas -- Washington's top pick -- has eight catches for 63 yards in nine games. Kelly has been limited to two games because of knee problems, and Washington is expected to put him on season-ending injured reserve if his knee does not respond well in practice this week.

"Knowing Malcolm, you know he likes to play, and he wants to be on the field, but he's got that knee injury, and you don't want it to get worse," QB Jason Campbell said.

"We'll just see how he works from day to day, and I'm pretty sure the coaches will make the decision on it. But we're getting to the tough part of our schedule, and either him or Devin, we're going to have to start to count on them a little bit."
