Churchill football coach Greg Neuendorf has resigned and plans to move to North Carolina, where his wife has accepted a job offer, according to the school's athletic director, David Kelly.
Neuendorf was 10-10 in two seasons with the Bulldogs. Churchill started this season 5-1, and was seeking its second playoff appearance in 13 years, but lost three of its last four. Still, the Bulldogs posted a winning mark, 6-4, for just the fourth time since advancing to the 1995 Maryland 3A final.
"He's done an excellent job the last two years, with changing the football mentality around here," Kelly said of Neuendorf.
Kelly said the school will begin a search for Neuendorf's replacement immediately, and hopes to have a new coach in place by the end of the calendar year to implement an offseason conditioning program.
Flint Hill Girls Take Title
The Flint Hill girls' tennis team won the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championship Saturday, beating previously undefeated St. Catherine's, 6-3, in Richmond.
The Huskies overcame an injury-filled season to beat the top-ranked private school team in Virginia. Flint Hill No. 2 player Kelsey McGillis and No. 4 Lindsay Shaefer battled injuries during the season.
"I wasn't surprised, just hugely impressed by the effort, the determination, the grit," Flint Hill Coach Ed Jalinske said of the team's second straight VISAA championship. The Huskies also defeated St. Catherine's in last year's final.
Sophomore Sonja Meighan completed an undefeated season at No. 1 singles. At one point this season she won 43 straight games.
After winning the ISL A championship in October, the Huskies will move into the league's upper division next fall.
