Complaint: This is more "consumer-aware" than anything. The Lancer Evolution GSR and MR truly are cars for people who love driving fast, don't mind giving up some creature comforts -- ingress and egress can be difficult for hefty or older types -- and don't mind changing tires when the snow falls.

Ride, acceleration and handling: This one offers exceptional performance in all three categories. Apparently, it's also high on the "stop-or-follow" lists of every police department in the country. I was police-monitored so much during my week in the car that I was beginning to feel downright presidential.

Head-turning quotient: The 10th generation of the Lancer Evolution is much more visually appealing than its predecessors, which were borderline adolescent in exterior design. I still can do without that high rear spoiler. But the rest of the car now looks like something an adult would buy.

Body style/layout: The Lancer Evolution GSR and MR are compact, front-engine, all-wheel-drive, high-performance sedans designed for weekend racetrack battle, but capable of being pressed into service for daily commutes.

Engine transmission: The standard 2-liter, 16-valve, double-overhead cam engine with electronically timed valve lift and control (to help reduce fuel use) develops 291 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions a minute and 300 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 revolutions per minute. It is linked to a double-clutch, six-speed transmission that can be shifted automatically or manually.

Capacities: There are seats for five people -- with cramped seating in the rear. Luggage capacity is 6.9 cubic feet. Fuel capacity is 14.5 gallons of premium unleaded gasoline recommended for best performance.

Mileage: My real-world mileage was 15 miles per gallon city and 20 mpg highway, poor enough to make me appreciate falling gasoline prices.

Safety: Standard equipment includes ventilated Brembo disc brakes front and rear with antilock control; head and side air bags; electronic stability and traction control . . . and one of the best sports-car suspensions there is.

Price: Base price on the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR is $38,290. Dealer's invoice price on that model is $36,089. Price as tested is $43,514, including $4,549 in options (onboard navigation, premium leather seats, premium sound system, rear spoiler and other external add-ons) and a $675 destination charge. Dealer's price as tested is $40,495. Prices sourced from Mitsubishi, Edmunds.com and Cars.com, an affiliate of The Washington Post.

Purse-strings note: "Cheaper than a Ferrari . . . more fun than a Porsche."
