James Madison Clinches Share of CAA Title

Rodney Landers accounted for 357 yards and four touchdowns to help lead James Madison to a 48-24 win against William & Mary, as the Dukes clinched at least a share of the Colonial Athletic Association title yesterday in Harrisonburg, Va.

Landers completed 14 of 19 passes for 219 yards with three touchdowns, and he also rushed for 145 yards and a score on 18 carries for the Dukes (9-1, 7-0 CAA). Eugene Holloman added 130 yards and two scores on 23 carries for James Madison, which remains the top-ranked team in division I-AA and the only unbeaten team in the CAA.

Jake Phillips completed 16 of 30 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns for the Tribe (7-3, 5-2).

In the first half, Landers connected on touchdowns of 50 and 34 yards to Marcus Turner and a four-yard score to Mike Caussin to give the Dukes a 24-10 lead at the break.

· BETHUNE-COOKMAN 14, HOWARD 12: McKinson Souverain and Corey Council each scored a touchdown to help the host Tigers (8-2, 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) to their fourth straight win. Souverain ran for 53 yards for one touchdown and Council returned a punt 55 yards to hand the Bison (1-9, 0-7) their six loss in a row.

Howard scored with one minute left in the game on Floyd Haigler's eight-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Sherman. The Bison could have tied the game on the two-point conversion, but Haigler's pass went incomplete.

Karlos Whittaker scored Howard's first touchdown on a four-yard run with 13:36 left in the fourth quarter. Dennis Wiehberg's ensuing extra-point try was blocked by Bethune-Cookman's Travis Roland, giving the Wildcats a 7-6 lead.

Haigler completed 30 of 49 passes for 197 yards and was sacked five times.

· FORDHAM 17, GEORGETOWN 0: John Skelton threw two touchdowns and had 173 yards passing to lead the host Rams (5-5, 1-4 Patriot League).

Xavier Martin had 176 yards on 36 carries for Fordham, boosting his season total to 1,080 yards. He is the sixth player in school history to reach 1,000 yards in single season.

Scott Darby completed 12 of 27 passes for 70 yards for the Hoyas (2-8, 0-6).

· BRIDGEWATER 37, CATHOLIC 26: The Cardinals (8-2, 4-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) will have to hope for an at-large berth to the Division III playoffs after a home loss to the Eagles (4-6, 3-3).

Keith Ricca was 18 of 36 for 231 yards, with three touchdown passes and no interceptions for Catholic. His counterpart, Hagan Driskell, was 16 of 23 for 241 yards, with two touchdown passes and one interception.
