The National Zoo's latest addition is a female dama gazelle calf, born Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, to the zoo's two-year-old Adara.

The yet unnamed calf, who weighed 10 pounds at birth, adds another female to a critically endangered species. It is estimated that less than 500 dama gazelles -- they are a type of Saharan antelope -- exist in the wild, according to the Zoo, as hunting and poaching have hurt the species' numbers.

The calf is one of nine dama gazelles belonging to the Zoo: four live at the Zoo itself and five live at the Zoo's Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal.
