President Acts to Avoid Holiday Flight Delays
· If you are taking a plane trip with your family for Thanksgiving, you can thank President Bush for making it easier.
Yesterday the president took steps to prevent frustrating flight delays during the busy travel week. Bush agreed to let regular airliners use airspace that is usually used only by the military. It's a bit like letting cars use restricted lanes on a highway to make sure drivers get where they're going more quickly.
The president also said three new runways are opening Thursday at three busy airports, including one at Dulles International Airport outside Washington.
Last year airspace was opened on the East Coast during Thanksgiving. This year, that will be expanded to include the Midwest, the Southwest and the West Coast.
"A lot of our citizens are nervous about travel," Bush told hundreds of employees at the Department of Transportation.
About 24 million people are expected to fly for the holiday, officials said.
