Born: Jan. 21, 1951, in the Bronx.
Education: BA, Columbia University, 1973; JD, Columbia, 1976.
Family: Wife, Sharon Malone, a Washington obstetrician/gynecologist; children, Maya, Brooke and Eric.
Career highlights: Clerked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Justice Department's criminal division while pursuing his law degree. Upon graduation, joined Justice's public integrity section as a trial lawyer. Held that job until moving to D.C. Superior Court in 1988 as an associate judge. Appointed U.S. attorney for the District in 1993. Confirmed in 1997 as deputy attorney general. Served as acting attorney general for two weeks in 2001, after President Bush took office and before the Senate confirmed John D. Ashcroft for the post. Joined the law firm Covington & Burling as a partner. Became a senior legal adviser to Barack Obama's presidential campaign last year and assisted Caroline Kennedy in vetting vice presidential candidates.
