Education: BA, South Dakota State University, 1969

Family: Married to Linda Hall Daschle, a lobbyist representing primarily aviation companies; three children from a previous marriage, Kelly, Nathan and Lindsay.

Career highlights: After becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college, Daschle spent three years as an Air Force intelligence officer. Served for four terms in the House and three in the Senate. Was elected Senate Democratic leader in 1994, a post he held for 10 years. Wrote two books, "Like No Other Time" and "Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis." Is a special policy adviser at the Washington law firm Alston & Bird. Serves as a distinguished senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank founded by Barack Obama's transition co-chairman, John D. Podesta. Was said to be instrumental in persuading Obama to run for the White House.
