Rockets C Yao Ming sat out Houston's game against the Mavericks last night because of a sore left foot, an injury the six-time all-star said wasn't serious.

This Story

Yao was hurt against the Thunder on Monday night. He underwent tests on Tuesday and yesterday that revealed no structural damage.

"It's nothing bad," said Yao, the Rockets' leading scorer, averaging 17 points. "I'm all right, actually. I'll maybe take a few days, maybe one day."

Yao is expected to play at Washington tomorrow night.

But injuries have cut short Yao's past three seasons and he got a scare Tuesday when doctors said he might be out "a couple weeks." They gave him a much less severe diagnosis yesterday morning, Yao said.

Yao broke his left foot last February and missed the final 26 games of the regular season. He had surgery and said he was recovered when training camp began.

· MAVERICKS: G Josh Howard was inactive for Dallas's game last night against Houston because of a left ankle injury.

Howard, averaging 20.3 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds, was injured during the Mavs' 100-83 win in Charlotte on Tuesday. He did not leave the game and scored 21 points.

· BOBCATS: Charlotte waived little-used Fs Andre Brown and Linton Johnson and was on the verge of signing C Dwayne Jones.

The Bobcats were also one of several teams pursuing F Antonio McDyess.

GM Rod Higgins said Jones would probably sign today.
