PRESSING ISSUES: In both of its first two games this season, Maryland has improved its shooting and overall offensive flow by implementing a full-court press defensively. "When you're a pressing team, you really have to be careful with that, so the players don't rely on that," Coach Gary Williams said yesterday. "In other words, we should be able to score without pressing. Your press shouldn't be the reason your offense gets going." Still, junior Landon Milbourne and sophomore Adrian Bowie said the team might consider utilizing it from the start of tonight's game.
REBOUNDING EDGE?: Williams called Vermont "the best offensive rebounding team" Maryland has faced this season. That's not saying much, and it likely would come as news to Vermont Coach Mike Lonergan, a former Terrapins assistant who has not been pleased with his team's rebounding performance thus far. Lonergan said three of his team's big men, including 6-foot-7 freshman Jordan Clarke (Good Counsel), have missed time because of injuries. Clarke is out because of a stress reaction in his foot.
ONE AWAY: Maryland's next win will be Williams's 400th as Terrapins coach. When he took over in 1989, four current players were not yet born. "That's what's scary; you're looking at a form from the NCAA or something where you have to list your players and you think, 'People were born then?' " Williams said. "That's scary, it really is."
