Rookie JaVale McGee made his second straight start last night against the Houston Rockets. The 7-footer entered the game averaging 21.4 minutes and that figure likely will rise as he continues to develop, so conditioning will be a key component to his success.
The 237-pound McGee has a low body fat percentage and reported to training camp in excellent shape, but he will be tested like never before as the season rolls along. Already this season, he has been bent over, grasping at his basketball trunks after prolonged bursts of action.
"He's still developing so to keep up with the NBA game, the physical part of it and the mental part of it, that can wear on you," Coach Eddie Jordan said. "It's just going to take time. With the youth, you see the foundation and you see the potential and yet, it doesn't happen overnight."
ยท CHANGING IT UP: There's nothing like a shooting slump to make a guy change up his routine. That's exactly what DeShawn Stevenson did before the last two games. Prior to Wednesday's loss at Atlanta and again before last night's game against Houston, Stevenson put himself through an extended shooting session about an hour and a half before tip-off.
Typically, Stevenson does the bulk of his shooting at the morning shoot-around and doesn't hit the court until pregame warmups.
"Shoot, I have to do something different," Stevenson said before the game. "I made some shots [against Atlanta] after doing it so I thought I'd do it again. It can't hurt."
