The Redskins are hoping not to be too short-handed at linebacker and along the defensive line when they play the New York Giants on Sunday. LB London Fletcher and DE Andre Carter both had MRI exams on their injured feet yesterday.

Coach Jim Zorn said Carter's MRI confirmed a sprain of his plantar fascia. Carter is wearing a boot on his right foot, but said he is not ruling out playing this weekend.

"I'm optimistic about it," he said, noting the team's dwindling number of defensive linemen.

Fletcher left Redskins Park limping significantly and wearing a walking boot on his left foot. Zorn said that Fletcher had a contusion and sprain in the lower part of the foot. Fletcher, held to a season-low two tackles in Sunday's win over Seattle, did not rule himself out against the Giants.

"I'd say day-to-day," Fletcher said. "We'll have to see how it goes."

H.B. Blades would replace Fletcher if needed, while reserve Alfred Fincher would play a great deal of strong-side linebacker.

Another option would be to keep DE Jason Taylor playing extensively at linebacker, as he did Sunday, but there is a good chance Taylor may have to play right defensive end against the Giants, given Carter's injury.

Washington also will need Demetric Evans at left end most of the time anyway, given New York's top-ranked rushing attack.

ยท OTHER INJURIES: DT Kedric Golston was on crutches with a bone spur in his foot, with Zorn saying Golston "went to heroics" to stay in Sunday's game. . . .

LB Marcus Washington will remain out against the Giants with a high-ankle sprain, though Zorn said he expects DT Anthony Montgomery to be back after missing a few games with an Achilles' tendon injury. . . .

DT Cornelius Griffin received an injection in his injured shoulder to get through Sunday's game, but Zorn said he expects him to play against New York. . . .
