Thefts From Vehicles Up 20% in Leesburg

Leesburg police said they have investigated 162 thefts from vehicles this year, a 20 percent increase over the same period last year.

A majority of the cars were unlocked, and stolen items included Global Positioning System devices, cellphones and CDs.

The department said it was able to close 52 of the cases with help from federal agencies and Loudoun County sheriff's officials.

Police encouraged residents to lock their cars and remove personal items from vehicles or keep them out of sight.

Missing Sterling Teen Returns to Her Home

A missing Sterling teenager who was considered in danger returned home Saturday night, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Ashley Dill, 17, was reported missing Thursday and was considered endangered after she reportedly made statements that she was going to harm herself.

In an attempt to locate the teenager, authorities issued a missing-person alert with her description and a description of the vehicle she was driving.

Sheriff's deputies went to her family's residence shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday after she returned home, the sheriff's office said.

Purcellville to Offer Holiday Lights Tour

Purcellville residents will have a chance to visit the town's most decorated streets during the town's second annual Christmas Lights Trolley Tour, from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 12 and 14.

The 30-minute tours will depart from the town's gazebo on 21st Street. The trolley will leave every half-hour, with the last ride departing at 8:30.

Town staff will choose the tour route on Dec. 6 and 7. Residents can register their streets for the tour by e-mailing cherman@purcellvilleva.gov or calling 540-751-2326.

Free Holiday Parking Offered in Middleburg

Middleburg is offering free parking from Dec. 8 to 31 in the municipal lots behind the United Methodist Church on South Pendleton and South Liberty streets.

Loudoun Tops in Va. For Berry Production

Loudoun County is the top berry producer in the state, according to a recent Virginia Cooperative Extension study.

Berry crops, including strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, are grown in 75 Virginia counties. Production of the crop is more heavily concentrated in Northern Virginia, with Loudoun accounting for the highest number of operations and having more than twice as many as the next-highest locality.
