"We are ready to strip the wallpaper and start painting," says Loretta Levri, "but are at a loss as to how to decorate and utilize our entryway-dining room area to its fullest potential." The 10 1/2 -by-18 1/4 -foot space is small and dark, and "we have overloaded it with the wrong furniture," Levri says. Extra seating is key because her husband has 10 siblings. And with two kids, Levri adds, "clutter is becoming my daily obstacle."

Welcome guests with vivid colors and a fireplace. A bench and ottomans double as storage bins. Keep the room open to encourage flexible furniture placement. Paint the crown molding the same color as the walls to make the ceiling appear taller.
